My teaching combines high technical and musical rigor with a supportive and encouraging environment where students are challenged to think critically, explore creatively, and develop confidence as dedicated and curious musicians. I teach a little over 30 students of all ages and experience levels, from kindergarten students taking their first lessons to advanced students preparing for auditions, as well as adults returning to music or discovering it for the first time. Many of my adult students are parents of current or former students who have been inspired to begin, or return to, their own musical journey.
Drawing from my own musical journey as well as the established pedagogical approaches of Simon Fischer, Shinichi Suzuki, and Karen Tuttle, I primarily focus on classical viola and violin repertoire, combining technical exercises with ear training, sight-reading, and body percussion to help students develop strong, well-rounded musicianship and a deep understanding of classical music. Students from my studio regularly take on active and leadership roles in their school orchestras and are accepted to and perform in selective youth orchestras, including Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, New England Conservatory Preparatory School, and Rivers School Conservatory.
A key part of my teaching is working collaboratively with students to help them learn how to think, rather than simply telling them what to do. I ask open-ended questions and encourage students, even from the beginning of their musical journey, to reflect, elaborate, and share their own insights. Above all, I strive to prepare my students not only for success in auditions, competitions, and advanced study, but also to inspire a lifelong love of music that brings curiosity and joy both within and beyond the practice room.

Long is the best music teacher my kids have had! They love that he is encouraging and supportive, and also holds them to a high level of expectations. His level of communication is exceptional, and he is a rare hidden gem.
Mr. Long is honestly one of a kind! Learning can get tough and boring sometimes, and there were definitely moments we felt like throwing in the towel — but he always found a way to make things fun and keep us going. We wouldn’t have made it this far without him. So grateful to have such an amazing teacher by our side!
Mr. Long is a wonderful teacher and is very knowledgeable. The techniques that he has taught our daughter have been instrumental in increasing her violin abilities and confidence, while also motivating her through the sounds that she has been producing.
Long is an excellent teacher who supports both technical precision and artistic growth at the same time. He keeps lessons fun and engaging while still teaching substantive skills.
